Without improved sanitation – a facility that safely separates human waste from human contact – people have no choice but to use inadequate communal latrines or to practice open defecation. For women and girls, finding a place to go to the toilet outside, often having to wait until the cover of darkness, can leave them vulnerable to abuse and sexual assault. The sustainable management of solid waste remains a low-level priority for many cities, particularly when compared with investments in other development sectors and infrastructure investments in transportation, energy, the building, and construction industry, etc. The open dumping of waste continues to be the commonly deployed waste management approach, especially in cities in low- and middle-income countries. Many these landfill sites do not operate scientifically and receive waste without any pre-treatment, creating dumpsites.
