Awareness Creation on Plastic Waste Management and Clean-up Drives in Agra, funded by GIZ.
Project Background & Objectives: The project activities have been processed with the implementation of project objectives. The project’s goal and objectives have been discussed with the team along with the activities, selection of project sites, major stakeholders, IEC to be used, data collection, and other awareness procedures. Improper waste management is one of the major causes of pollution from cities to the ocean. Rain water and wind carry plastic waste into streams and rivers, and through drains that lead to the ocean. Lack of citizen’s participation and awareness is also a big contributor
The objectives of this assignment are as follows:
• Door-to-door awareness campaign non source segregation in selected wards of Agra.
• Support two land-based plastic waste clean-up campaigns in Agra City.
• Conduct four awareness/collection drives as public events in selected locations in Agra.

Activities completed and methodology followed:
• Preparation of a Participatory implementation Creating Awareness among the citizen through door-to-door campaigns and IPCs with minimum coverage of 5000 households.
• Involving city-level stake holders and key players.
• Increase citizens’ participation in the project activities.
• Coordination with Agra Municipal Corporation for approvals/permissions ,GIZ and Geocycle
• Identification of priority wards.
• Covering at least 5000 households during the campaign
• Developing IEC material and its distribution.
• Creating awareness about Solid Waste Management with a key focus on; environmental problems due to improper waste management and its effect on birds, Terrestrial animals, aquatic animals and amphibians, SWM rule 2016. Plastic Waste Management and its compliances, penalties against non-compliance of rules, health hazards due to lack of proper waste management and the role of citizens in polluting the ocean.
• To involve sanitary workers in the awareness activities and their skill development fort application of SWM with a special focus on segregated waste collection and its disposal.
• To organize two “Garbage Vulnerable Points clean-up campaigns” and four awareness/waste collection drives with community participation.
• To encourage evolunteers/citizens to participate in the clean-up campaign and collection drive.
• Adopt innovative ideas for creating awareness and citizen participation.
• Maintain records of the campaign, photographs/videos and other documents.
• Execution of the project activities has been done with predatory work. To improve the waste collection and waste management in the household, various activities have been executed like door-to-door waste collection and data collection of each household, Triggering, Formation of Waste Watch groups with regular meetings,
• The proposed project will work with the coordination of the Municipal Corporation of Agra Identification of priority areas.
• Close coordination with Agra Municipal Corporation for approvals and other projectmatters. Involving the city-level and local stake holders in the project activities.

Results/outcomes achieved:
• The information/permission letter to the Municipal Commissioner of Agra Nagar Nigam has been forwarded by ADARSH. Adarsh team directly involved with the discussion with Counsellor of the Wards, Sanitary Inspectors, and Sanitary Staff.
• 5033 community residents have related to the awareness program through a door-to-door awareness campaign. The list of the people is enclosed with the report.
• The two IECs have been developed for awareness creation in the community.
• The brief discussion with the Counsellor of the Wards, Sanitary Inspectors, and Sanitary Staff for the clean-up drive was done. They provide their valuable thoughts and happily agree to the involvement of the drive. Some local community workers were also involved in the discussion.
• For the collection of waste in the dense area, team Adarsh visited the area and encouraged the people to dump the littering at the vehicle after the segregation. The waste collection vehicle reached the nearby place. With the help of the sanitary supervisor, the Sanitary Staff, the localities came from their houses and dumped the segregated waste into the vehicle.
• The field team observed that some of the places were used as a regular dumping point although they are not listed as one. For that team make a waste watch committee over there the checking the act and inform the team. After that, the team visits the person’s house and informs them that they do not do these activities. Collection vehicle came at morning time, placed your litter in that and before that segregated the waste at your end. If this happens again the team informs the sanitary supervisor and inspector of the same and does the combined visit to that place.
• Formation of the Waste Watch groups at Raj Nagar and Ashok Nagar for checking the impact of the awareness in the areas.
•Pilot Setup for 375 households for waste Segregation in Ward no. 45 and 18. The regular follow-ups of households for sustaining the practices of waste segregation.Source segregation and recycling result in waste minimization, or lesser waste reaching landfills. This directly translates into longer life spans of landfills, and reduced demand for land for new landfills.
• Promoting behavior change meetings for strengthening waste segregation in the households.
• Source segregation for sustained sensitization and participation of individuals.
• Day-to-day monitoring of every household on segregation.
• Collection of segregated waste will also be monitored by the team at the project area.
• Social information and appeals to non-based behavior reduce the littering and mix waste practices.
• Strengthen waste utilization facilities.
• Regular segregated waste collection training to the sanitary staff.
